A Step Towards Falling by Cammie McGovern

When Emily and Lucas find themselves completing community service at a centre for disabled people, they don’t think they have anything in common with each other, much less the others involved in the classes.

It seems like a slightly trite premise, and I was a bit concerned starting it that it might be a bit ableist and clunky. And at one point, it felt like it might go that way –  but McGovern instead created a story that gave the characters agency and were beautifully developed. There was some cheesiness around the romantic interests, but if romance can’t be a bit cheesy, what’s the point?
